Bell's palsy

Bell's palsy is a form of facial paralysis resulting from damage to
the VII (facial) cranial nerve. This nerve disorder afflicts
approximately 40,000 Americans each year. It can strike almost
anyone at any age; however, it disproportionately attacks pregnant
women and people who have diabetes, influenza, a cold, or some other
upper respiratory ailment. In addition to one-sided facial paralysis
with possible inability to close the eye, symptoms of Bell's palsy
may include pain, tearing, drooling, hypersensitivity to sound in
the affected ear, and impairment of taste. The common cold sore
virus, herpes simplex, and other herpes viruses are the likely cause
of many cases of Bell's palsy.

In Western medicine, recent studies have shown that steroids are
probably effective and that the drug acyclovir combined with
prednisone is possibly effective in improving facial function. Other
treatments are usually aimed at protecting the eye from drying at
nighttime. Some physicians may prescribe a corticosteroid drug to
help reduce inflammation and an analgesic to relieve pain.

The prognosis for Bell's palsy is generally very good. With or
without treatment, most patients begin to get significantly better
within 2 weeks, and about 80 percent recover completely within 3
months. For some, however, the symptoms may last longer. In a few
cases, the symptoms may never completely disappear.

I have seen acupuncture get incredible results. Something I would
highly reccommend. Bell's Palsy is the most common disease of the
facial nerve. It is presumably due to an inflammatory reaction in or
around the facial nerve near the stylomastoid foramen. According to
Liu (1995), when acupuncture was initiated within three days post-
onset in 684 cases of facial nerve paralysis, 100 percent of the
patients were cured or there was a marked improvement (5). Other
studies (Gao, Chen, 1991) revealed that 80% of cases that were
treated at more than 2 months post-onset, and 83 percent of severe
cases, were cured or had excellent effect (6). Treatment, as with
this patient, may include numerous diagnostic procedures, different
classes of medications, lifestyle alterations, and still, continued
suffering. Acupuncture may often lead to significant clinical
improvement (7).

Andrew Pacholyk, LMT, MT-BC, CA
Peacefulmind.com
Therapies for healing
mind, body and spirit

REFERENCES
1.

Dealing with Diabetes

Research has shown this chronic condition can be controlled and
greatly improved by conscientious lifestyle changes—i.e., weight
loss, diet, exercise—and in many ways yoga can help.

By Stacie Stukin

http://www.yogajournal.com/health/563_1.cfm

You probably don't think about diabetes—but you should. Diabetes can
strike people at almost any age. More than 16 million Americans are
affected—an increase of 33 percent from 1990 to 1998, according to
the Centers for Disease Control. Diabetes can lead to debilitating
or fatal complications, such as blindness, kidney disease, heart
disease, and amputations. While this may paint a bleak picture, the
outlook for diabetics is bright. Research has shown this chronic
condition can be controlled and greatly improved by conscientious
lifestyle changes—i.e., weight loss, diet, exercise—and in many ways
yoga can help.

There are two kinds of diabetes. Type 1 usually affects those under
the age of 30 and is caused by an autoimmune or genetic dysfunction
where the pancreas fails to release enough insulin, which is crucial
in breaking down sugar in the body. Type 2 diabetes, which affects
more than 90 percent of diabetics, is usually diagnosed in people
over 40 who are generally overweight and inactive. Unlike type 1,
the pancreas secretes enough insulin, but the body cannot
effectively use it.

Exercise is a big part of diabetes treatment because it increases
insulin sensitivity and lowers blood sugar. A report in the New
England Journal of Medicine (May 3, 2001) found people at a higher
risk for contracting type 2 diabetes can reduce their chance of
getting the disease by 58 percent by losing as little as 10 pounds,
exercising, and adopting a healthy diet.

And many have turned to yoga to battle the emotional and physical
challenges of weight loss. Several Indian and European studies have
indicated yoga also may help reduce insulin-regulating medication by
lowering blood sugar levels. But because people under stress have
elevated blood sugar levels, it's difficult to determine whether
asanas and meditation work because they relax patients or because
specific poses stimulate the pancreas, causing it to release more
insulin.

Either way, some believe a yoga intervention has to transcend the
pancreas and insulin problem. "If you work just the pancreas and not
the other organs, then you do not create a balance," says Shanti
Shanti Kaur Khalsa, Ph.D., who teaches Kundalini Yoga techniques to
diabetics. "Diabetes has to do with carbohydrate metabolism, so I
also advise rhythmic movements, like charnjap, a yogic form of
walking that involves breath and mantra and can improve metabolism."
Yet it's important to keep in mind that yoga is but one component
for treatment. Says David Simon, M.D., of the Chopra Center in San
Diego: "Yoga can help, but diabetics need more; they need aerobic,
strength-building activities."

Diet Therapy for Spleen Qi Vacuity Dampness
by Juliette Aiyana, LAc

"This is basic dietary info for a Chinese medical pattern that almost
anyone can have some of the time. It looks like tiredness, loose
stool, and low appetite.

You can get it from worry, overwork, overthinking, lack of exercise,
and too much cold foods.

IF YOU WANT MORE ENERGY,

Thanks for Writing In!

In my last article I invited readers to send me the TCM Pattern
Discrimination their Practitioner had given them so that I could
write an article about how to treat specific imbalances with the
diet. Two readers wrote me about the Pattern Discrimination of
Spleen Qi Vacuity Dampness. Thanks for writing in because I
frequently see this condition in my practice, and it's very
important to address.

What Does the Spleen Do?

Before we discuss diet, it is important to understand the causes and
effects of Spleen Qi Vacuity Dampness (also known as Spleen Qi
Deficiency Dampness). One function of the Spleen is to assimilate
nutrients from food in the stomach to form the Qi, Blood and Body
Fluids. Therefore, the Spleen's main function is to govern the
transformation and transportation (T&T) of grain (food) and water
into essence, which is distributed to other organ systems as Qi and
Blood. Thus it is vital to keep the Spleen healthy because it is
the source for Qi and blood production for your entire body.

What is Dampness?

Dampness results from the body's failure to transform fluids. It
could be thought of as "fluids in the wrong place." It includes
water weight, edema, and perhaps even arterial plaque.

The Spleen and Dampness

An important saying in Chinese medicine states, "The Spleen hates
cold and the Spleen hates dampness." So we must do what we can to
keep the Spleen warm and free of dampness. Spleen vacuity occurs
when the process of transformation and transportation malfunctions,
thus causing dampness to gather and stagnate instead of transforming
which further weakens T&T.

Then a vicious cycle begins.

If the Spleen is Hindered, So Are Other Bodily Organs
Since other organ systems depend on receiving Qi and Blood from the
Spleen, they will become weaken when a patients suffers from chronic
or long term Spleen Qi Vacuity.

How Do You Get Spleen Qi Vacuity?
Spleen Qi may become vacuous (empty) due to one or a combination of
the following factors:

Overwork
Over-fatigue
Too much worrying
Over thinking and obsessive thought patterns
Unhealthy dietary habits
Lack of exercise
Here are some examples of how this works in real life:

Students and Worry: Students who work in addition to going to school
or college, need to find time to study and may, quite naturally,
worry about exams.

Fatiguing Illnesses: Some patients have fatiguing chronic illness
like cancer and fibromyalgia.

Weight Obsessions:

Dancers and actors worry or even obsess about their weight despite
the fact that many of them are underweight. Overweight patients
worry and obsess about their weight for health or aesthetic reasons
and feel a ridiculous amount societal and self-induced pressure to
lose weight.

Overthinking and Deprivation: And many of my patients (over weight or
not) are mentally obsessed with their weight and thus constantly over
thinking about counting calories and sticking to hard to follow diets
with point systems, blocks, deprivation diets or set meal plans of
foods they don't even enjoy eating.

Guilt and Worry: And no matter who the person is that is dieting,
skinny or overweight, many feel guilt instead of pleasure when
indulging in a food they like but which isn't in his meal plan. This
feeling of guilt fits into the worry category.

No Exercise: Patients who do not exercise do not invigorate the Yang
warming aspect of the body's Qi. Chinese medicine asserts that too
much sitting or lying down creates Qi vacuity.

Cold Foods: Many people damage the Spleen Qi by eating too many cold
foods. Cold foods are literally cold from refrigeration or frozen,
like ice, are foods that are cold in nature (see the list below) and
include cold beverages and salad and last nights left over cold
pizza (yeah, we've all been there). Other detriments include our
society's over eating of wheat as our main source of grain, and too
much beer drinking. Both are cool and dampness producing. Not to
mention our over consumption of dairy. Imagine all the Spleen Qi
vacuity amongst college students between all that studying, beer and
pizza!

Dietary Therapy for Spleen Qi Vacuity
The treatment principle for Spleen Qi Vacuity Dampness is to fortify
the Spleen and disinhibit (percolate, filter, promote urination) the
dampness. We also want to avoid further detriment to the spleen.
Yang tonics will help to warm the Spleen and to motivate the energy
for the T&T cycle. They maintain and improve our ability to generate
warmth and stimulate our system.

Yang tonics include:

Basil
Chestnut
Chive Seed
Cinnamon Bark
Clove
Dill Seed
Fennel Seed
Fenugreek Seed
Garlic
Dried Ginger
Lamb
Lobster
Nutmeg
Pistachio
Raspberry
Rosemary
Sage
Savoy
Shrimp
Star Anise
Thyme
Walnut

Qi circulation is stimulated by the sweet and pungent flavors. The
Spleen likes the sweet taste and pungent flavors circulate the Qi.
Foods that particularly influence Qi circulation include:

Basil
Caraway
Cardamon
Carrot
Cayenne
Chive
Clove Coriander
Dill Seed
Garlic
Jasmine Tea
Marjoram
Mustard Leaf
Orange Peel
Peppermint Tea
Radish
Star Anise
Tangerine Peel
Turmeric

Cold conditions are improved by warming foods. In chronic cases warm
and sweet/pungent foods are used to warm us steadily. In acute cases
of pathogenic invasion warm or hot foods are combined with stronger
pungent flavors to drive out the Cold.

Warming foods include:

Anchovy
Basil
Bay leaf
Black Pepper
Coconut
Cayenne
Cherry
Chestnut
Chicken
Coriander
Dill Seed
Fennel Seed
Garlic
Ginger
Kohlrabi
Lamb
Lee
Mussel
Mustard Leaf
Mutton
Nutmeg
Oats
Onion
Peach
Quinoa
Rosemary
Scallion
Shrimp
Spelt
Squash
Sweet Potato
Sweet Rice
Trout
Turnip Vinegar
Walnut
Wine

Dampness results from the body's failure to transform fluids.
Dampness is treated by avoiding dampening foods, strengthening the
body, including bitter foods and foods that counteract Dampness.

Effective foods to eat include:

Aduki Bean
Alfalfa
Anchovy
Amaranth
Barley
Buckwheat
Celery
Corn
Cranberry
Daikon
Eel
Garlic
Green Tea
Horseradish
Jasmine Tea
Kidney Beans
Kohlrabi
Lemon
Mackerel
Marjoram
Mushroom (button)
Mustard Leaf
Onion
Parsley
Papaya
Pumpkin
Radish
Rice Bran
Rye
Scallion
Turnip
Umeboshi Plum

Some foods will worsen the tendency towards Dampness, so Damp people
should cut back on them. Avoid these foods:

Dairy Products (sheep and goat products are less dampening)

Pork
Roasted Peanuts
Concentrated Juices especially Orange
Wheat products
Bread
Yeast
Beer
Bananas
Sugar and sweeteners
Saturated fats
Greasy, fried and oily foods
Iced or cooled beverages
Uncooked raw vegetables and salads
Phlegm refers to a condition of dampness where moisture is retained
as Phlegm or Mucus. Phlegm-resolving foods include:

Almond
Apple Peel
Clam
Daikon
Garlic
Grapefruit
Lemon Peel
Licorice
Marjoram
Mushroom (button)
Mustard Leaf
Mustard Seed
Olive
Onion
Orange Peel
Pear
Radish
Seaweed
Shitake Mushroom
Shrimp
Tea
Thyme
Walnut
Watercress

I have so much more information about diet that it would take a whole
book to explain. Don't worry - I am working on that! In the meantime
I am available for live seminars. Take these recommendations to your
kitchen and cook some delicious meals for yourself be well and stay
healthy.

Conclusion
Chinese Dietary Therapy is an essential part of healing this Qi
disharmony. I urge my readers to continue to take the herbs and
acupuncture treatments your practitioner recommends, but do
incorporate this information about diet into your therapy and
lifestyle.
Salute!
Juliette Aiyana, L.Ac.
212-894-0767
www.acupunctureandherbs.net

50/50 chance of proper health care
By Rita Rubin, USA TODAY

http://www.usatoday.com/news/health/2003-06-25-medical-quality_x.htm

On average, doctors provide appropriate health care only about half
the time, a landmark study of adults in 12 U.S. metropolitan areas
suggests.

Such deficiencies "pose serious threats to the health of the
American public" that lead to tens of thousands of preventable
deaths each year, researchers report in today's New England Journal
of Medicine.

The authors say their work is the largest and most comprehensive
examination of the quality of health care in the USA. Though the
study stopped short of linking inappropriate care to the poor health
or death of individual patients, it shows that Americans cannot take
for granted that they're getting good care, says lead author
Elizabeth McGlynn, associate director of RAND Health.

The study involved 7,528 adults who participated in a telephone
interview about their health history and provided access to their
medical records.

Researchers used the medical records to assess care for 30 common
conditions as well as preventive care. They based their evaluation
on 439 indicators of quality gleaned from established national
guidelines and medical literature. For example, if patients had high
blood pressure, researchers checked whether their doctors had
changed their medication to better control blood pressure. For
preventive care, researchers examined factors such as cancer
screening and flu shots for the elderly.

Overall, patients' medical charts showed that doctors provided 55%
of appropriate care. On average, that proportion varied little among
the chronic, acute or preventive care categories. McGlynn
acknowledges that it's possible that doctors didn't write everything
down in patients' charts. But that in itself represents poor-quality
care, she says. "How can they proactively follow up on something if
they don't have a note on the chart?"

The key to improving health care quality would be to provide
performance data on all U.S. doctors, McGlynn says. Such a step
would require "a major overhaul of our current health information
systems," she and her colleagues write.

Carolyn Clancy, director of the Agency for Health Quality and
Research, says Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy Thompson is
eager to switch to a more efficient paperless health care system.

In an accompanying editorial, Earl Steinberg writes that
it's "ludicrous" to expect physicians to keep up with hundreds of
practice guidelines without a computerized system. "I reliably
receive reminders when my dog needs a vaccination," writes
Steinberg, of Johns Hopkins University. "Physicians and patients
should also receive computer-driven reminders."

Karen Ignagni, president of the American Association of Health
Plans, commended the study in a statement: "We couldn't agree more
that consumers in America's health care system face a dangerous
disconnect between what the best medical science recommends and the
treatment they often receive."

Note - the following was in the paper but not posted on the web page!

Hit-and-miss health care
The study on medical care found that:

Patients with high blood pressure received 65% of recommended care.
Poor blood pressure control contributes to more than 68,000
preventable deaths annually, researchers say.

Only 45% of heart attack patients received beta-blockers, which have
been proven to reduce the risk of dying by 23%.

A third of patients had been screened for colorectal cancer. Routine
screening and follow-up care could prevent about 9,600 deaths each
year.

Organic farmers sing biotech blues
Date: 14 Jul 2003 11:34:01 -0000

From: News Update from The Campaign
Subject: Organic farmers sing biotech blues

News Update From The Campaign to Label Genetically Engineered Foods
---------------------------------------------------------------------
-

Dear News Update Subscribers,

Organic crops are being contaminated by genetically engineered crops.
The article posted below titled "Organic farmers sing biotech blues"
from Monday's Des Moines Register discusses this ongoing problem.

At a recent debate over genetically engineered foods in Sacramento,
California, David Hegwood, Counsel to the U.S. Secretary of
Agriculture, was confronted about this fact by an organic farmer
during the question and answer session. Hegwood responded that
the "USDA was looking into this problem."

Frankly, there is not too much to look into. It is clear that
genetically engineered crops are contaminating organic crops. The
only responsible action by the USDA would be to confine the growing
of genetically engineered crops to greenhouses. But since Secretary
of Agriculture, Ann Veneman, used to work in the biotech industry,
such an action by the USDA is very unlikely.

The fastest way to rapidly reduce the acreage of genetically
engineered crops being grown in the United States is to pass the
mandatory labeling legislation into law. If genetically engineered
foods are labeled, most consumers will not buy them. And if
consumers do not buy genetically engineered foods, farmers will not
grow these crops.

THE BOTTOM LINE IS THAT THE QUICKEST WAY TO PROTECT ORGANIC
AGRICULTURE FROM CONTAMINATION IS TO GET THE LEGISLATION TO
REQUIRE THE MANDATORY LABELING OF GENETICALLY ENGINEERED
FOODS PASSED INTO LAW.

The labeling legislation, called the "Genetically Engineered Food
Right to Know Act of 2003," will be introduced before the U.S. House
of Representatives later this month by Representative Dennis Kucinich
(D-Ohio).

If you have not already sent an e-mail and printed out a form letter
to mail to your House Representative asking him or her to co-sponsor
the labeling legislation, please do so now from our web site at:
http://www.thecampaign.org/alert-house.php

Thanks for participating in the effort to protect the purity and
integrity of organic agriculture!

Craig Winters
Executive Director
The Campaign to Label Genetically Engineered Foods

The Campaign
PO Box 55699
Seattle, WA 98155
Tel: 425-771-4049
Fax: 603-825-5841
E-mail: mailto:label@thecampaign.org
Web Site: http://www.thecampaign.org

Mission Statement: "To create a national grassroots consumer campaign
for the purpose of lobbying Congress and the President to pass
legislation that will require the labeling of genetically engineered
foods in the United States."

***************************************************************

Organic farmers sing biotech blues

By PHILIP BRASHER
Des Moines Register - Washington Bureau
07/14/2003

Washington, D.C. - Farmers who are trying to fill America's growing
appetite for organic food are battling more than just bugs and weeds.

Genetically engineered corn and soybeans are becoming so widespread
that organic growers - who count on selling their crops for two to
three times as much as conventional varieties - say they are having
trouble keeping biotech contamination out of their crops.

Federal rules bar the use of biotechnology in organic agriculture,
and even the slightest bit of biotech contamination can cut the
value of the crop by a third or more.

"The first load of corn you send out with every new crop you hold
your breath," said Roger Lansink, an organic farmer near Odebolt,
Ia. He said a "huge percentage" of organic corn probably contains
traces of biotech residue.

Organic crops can be contaminated in a variety of ways. Bags of seed
often include traces of biotech varieties. Depending on weather
conditions and farming practices, organic corn can easily
cross-pollinate with biotech corn in nearby fields.

Lansink had a load of soybeans test positive for biotech
contamination two years ago and almost had to sell the crop for half
what it was worth as an organic crop.

Dave Vetter, a Nebraska farmer, said his organic corn crop tested
positive for biotech residue three years in a row, and he lost a
customer as a result.

Food companies and livestock producers are increasingly forcing
farmers and grain elevators to test organic commodities to detect
any traces of biotech material, known as GMO for genetically
modified organism.

"The trend for difficulty is going up and will continue to get worse
if the planting trends for GMOs continues as they've been in the last
several years," said Lynn Clarkson, president of Clarkson Grain Co.
Inc. of Cerro Gordo, Ill., a major supplier of biotech-free grain to
U.S. and foreign companies.

Biotech crops have exploded in popularity with conventional farmers
since the late 1990s. This year, 81 percent of the soybeans and 40
percent of the field corn grown nationwide is genetically engineered
to protect the plants from herbicide or insect damage.

Sales of organic foods, meanwhile, have been growing by 20 percent a
year. To meet the demand for organic crops and biotech-free seed,
some companies already are starting to look for foreign sources. An
Indiana seed company that supplies Clarkson's contract farmers is
growing its crops in South America.

In the European Union, a new law regulating agricultural
biotechnology will allow countries to isolate genetically engineered
crops to prevent unwanted pollen spread.

A recent survey of U.S. organic farmers by the Organic Farming
Research Foundation found more than half of the 990 respondents said
the government wasn't doing enough to protect them from biotech
contamination. Eighteen farmers in the survey said their crops had
tested positive for biotech material.

To some extent, the organic industry brought its problem on itself.

When the U.S. Department of Agriculture originally proposed rules for
organic agriculture in the mid-1990s, they would have allowed the
use of biotech seeds. But USDA reversed itself after receiving
thousands of comments opposed to the provision. Not only are organic
crop farmers barred from using biotech seeds, but livestock
producers also are required to use organically grown feed.

The USDA rules, which took effect last year, don't require organic
crops to be tested for biotech residue, and the department says that
unintentional biotech residue doesn't prevent a crop from being
called "organic."

But that doesn't stop organic food companies and organic livestock
producers from requiring seeds and crops to be tested for GMO
content.

Both the testing requirements and GMO tolerances - the amount of
biotech residue permitted in a crop - vary from company to company.
Some grain companies test organic grain if it is to be sold for food
but not for animal feed. Other companies test everything.

The financial stakes for farmers are large: Organic soybeans that
can be sold for food go for $12.50 to $14.50 a bushel. Feed-grade
soybeans sell for about $9 a bushel, still about $3 more than
conventional soybeans.

Eden Foods Inc., a Michigan-based manufacturer of organic soy milk
and other products, requires testing of both seed and harvested
crops. Eden uses seed varieties that were developed by Iowa State
University without biotechnology.

Heartland Organic Marketing Cooperative, a grain handler in Stewart,
Ia., doesn't test the organic crops it buys so long as they are to be
used for animal feed and not food.

"If you end up at the end of your growing season and end up with corn
that's been cross-pollinated, which is not to be unexpected, there's
nothing in the (USDA) rules to say you can't move that through an
organic process," said Bob Turnbull, Heartland's marketing manager.

But some livestock producers, including meat industry giant Tyson
Foods Inc., which raises organic chickens, want their grain tested
anyway. Tyson, a customer of Clarkson Grain, allows up to 1 percent
biotech residue.

Organic corn growers probably face the biggest challenge, since
pollen can spread for long distances on the wind. Farmers say they
try to plant at different times than their neighbors and plant away
from biotech fields.

But even those steps aren't foolproof. Vetter, the Nebraska farmer,
planted a double row of trees around his farm, and he says the
neighbor upwind of him doesn't plant biotech varieties, yet Vetter's
organic crops have still been contaminated. "We don't really know
where it's coming from," he said.

Lansink typically plants his corn several weeks after his neighbor to
prevent the crops from pollinating at the same time. But this year,
because of the wet spring, his neighbors were forced to plant later
than usual, so the crops could pollinate simultaneously.

Organic farmers have little recourse if their crops are contaminated.

Lansink and some other growers asked the Iowa Legislature to set up
an indemnity fund to compensate farmers when specialty crops were
contaminated, but the idea didn't get anywhere. The money would have
come from a fee on all corn and soybean growers.

The Heartland co-op is in arbitration with a farmer whose soybeans
tested positive for biotech residue and had to be sold at
conventional prices.

Contamination problems

Crop purity isn't just a problem for organic farmers. Foreign buyers
in Europe and Asia, where many consumers don't want to eat
genetically engineered foods, insist that U.S. grain companies test
for biotech residues in corn and soybeans.

OVERSEAS: British supermarket chains like Marks and Spencer and Tesco
allow no more than 0.01 percent. Japan officially allows up to 5
percent, but Japanese companies typically have lower limits, industry
officials say.

TESTING: The most commonly used tests are supposed to detect
contamination levels of 1 percent or higher. A more sophisticated and
expensive method detects levels down to 0.01 percent.

***************************************************************

If you would like to comment on this News Update, you can do so at
the
forum section of our web site at: http://www.thecampaign.org/forums

***************************************************************

However not all may like the taste.

Highly encourage all to try this as there is nothing like knowing
form were all (most) sources that you are eating our coming from.

Yeast contains the B vitamins, proteins, and various energy-giving
factors still only partially known to science. here is nothing else
we have found which will pep you up as fast as yeast, make you feel
better, and keep you going strong."

Chris Gupta
---------------------------------------------------------------------
---------------------------------------------------------------------
-----------------
Dried yeast powder & tablets cause aftertaste and indigestion, and
are expensive. You can buy fresh compressed block yeast at bakery
shops for a few cents a pound. Tell them that you are going to eat
it, and you want the freshest they have. You mustn't eat it raw. It
has to be cooked to kill the fermentation, otherwise you will have
gas, and will not properly digest it.

To cook a pound of yeast, bring 1 cup of water to the boil in a pot
on low heat, put in the yeast about 1/4 pound at a time and stir
constantly, adding more yeast as it melts. After it is all melted,
keep stirring a little longer until it puffs up and begins to boil.
Put it in a little Pyrex measuring pitcher, cover with foil and put
it in the refrigerator, where it will keep fine for a month or more
if you don't foul it by drinking out of it or dipping into it with a
spoon.

You can flavor it with honey, molasses, vanilla, or whatever you
like. Pour yourself a few spoonsful each day, so one person would
use up the pound in three to four weeks. You can take it straight
from a spoon, or mix it into a beverage or food.

Yeast contains the B vitamins, proteins, and various energy-giving
factors still only partially known to science. But The Journal of the American Medical Association
(Dec. 18, 1996) noted that folic acid supplements fortified with
vitamin B12 would be a prudent way of gaining the
<http://www.newmediaexplorer.org/chris/2003/06/03/orthomolecular_solu
tions_to_heart_disease.htm>cardiovascular

benefits of folic acid without risking a B12 deficiency. In
addition, the April 9, 1998, issue of The New England Journal of
Medicine endorses folic acid as a means of reducing the incidence of
heart attack and stroke. Nevertheless, the FDA refuses to accept
that folic acid has any benefit other than preventing a certain type
of birth defect.

In fact, it took the FDA more than 30 years to even acknowledge that
folic acid prevents neural tube birth defects. Tens of thousands of
deformed babies have been born because the FDA prohibited claims
that pregnant women should take folic acid. When former Commissioner
David Kessler was confronted with overwhelming evidence that women
of child-bearing age should supplement with folic acid, he responded
in an NBC interview, "The quandary we're in at the Food and Drug
Administration is how to make folic acid available to women of child-
bearing age, but not put it in excessive amounts in the food supply
for other populations such as teenage boys or elderly people."

A newly released study shows just how fatally flawed the FDA's
position is. Data from the famous Nurses' Health Study conducted at
the Harvard Medical School show that long-term supplementation with
folic acid reduces the risk of colon cancer in women by an
astounding 75%. The fact that there are 90,000 women participating
in the study makes this finding especially significant. The authors
explain that folic acid obtained from supplements had a stronger
protective effect against colon cancer than folic acid consumed in
the diet. This study also helps to confirm the work of Dr. Bruce
Ames, the famous molecular biologist who has authored numerous
articles showing that folic acid is extremely effective in reventing
the initial dna mutations that can lead to cancer later in life.

The Nurses' Health Study also demonstrates that the degree of
protection against cancer is correlated with how long a dna-
protecting substance (such as folic acid) is consumed. The women who
took more than 400 micrograms of folic acid a day for 15 years
experienced the 75% reduction in colon cancer; short-term
supplementation produced only marginal protection.

There now exists a massive body of evidence that supplementation
with folic acid can prevent both cardiovascular disease and cancer,
yet the FDA has proposed rules that would prohibit the American
public from even learning about these benefits. Colon cancer will
kill 47,000 Americans this year. Too bad the FDA didn't allow these
colon cancer victims to learn of folic acid in time.

For a better format see:
http://www.newmediaexplorer.org/chris/2003/07/14/the_fda_versus_folic
_acid.htm

Health Benefits Of Laughter Therapy

It is more than three-and-a-half years now since people have been
practicing laughter therapy all over India. There is a growing demand
for opening laughter clubs at many more places in India and abroad.
Everyday, more and more people are joining laughter clubs. Obviously
there must be some health benefits, otherwise people would not make
the time to participate. Health benefits can be attributed to
positive thinking. Faith healing and autosuggestion are achieved when
we fortify our subconscious minds every day with a positive input.

Most Important: People suffering from a variety of diseases have
benefited in some way or the other. But we don't claim to have cured
long-standing ailments with laughter therapy. Laughter is more of a
supplementary and preventive therapy. We are starting clinical
research on it very soon. It will take a couple of years before we
publish research data on laughter therapy. Based on the interviews of
hundreds of people in India and research done all over the world, we
have found that laughter has helped many people.

Sense of Well Being: The one benefit everybody gets is a sense of
well being. After 15 minutes of laughter in the morning, you will
feel fresh throughout the day. There is no medicine like laughter
therapy which gives you instant results. You start feeling the
freshness straight away. Many people have found that they don't get
irritated over trivial things after starting this therapy. Their
approach towards life changes positively.

Depression, anxiety and psychosomatic disorders: The stress and
strain of modern life are taking a heavy toll on the human mind. Mind
related diseases like anxiety, depression, nervous breakdowns and
sleeplessness are on the rise. Laughter has benefited many people who
were on heavy tranquilizers and sleeping pills. Now they are getting
better sleep and their depression has reduced. People with suicidal
tendencies have started living with more hope.

Meditation and Relaxation: Laughter therapy is one of the finest
anti-
stress measures. It is ideally suited for today's stress ridden
lifestyle. It can be compared to any form of meditation or
relaxation. To achieve the desired end through meditation, one has to
put in a concerted effort to completely detach oneself, on mental and
emotional levels, from one's own feelings and thought process, as
well as from the physical world to prevent distractions. On the other
hand, while laughing, we do not have any conscious thought process
and all our senses naturally and effortlessly combine in a moment of
harmony, to give joy, peace and relaxation. In other types of
meditation you need to concentrate a lot to take your mind away from
distracting thoughts, which is easier said than done. Therefore,
Laughter Therapy is the easiest form of meditation, a form which
brings you instant relaxation.

High Blood Pressure and Heart disease: There are a number of causes
for high blood pressure and heart disease like heredity, being
overweight, smoking and excessive intake of saturated fats. But
stress is one of the most important factors. Laughter definitely
helps to control blood pressure by reducing the release of stress
related hormones and bringing relaxation. In experiments it has been
proved that there is a drop of 10-20 mm. pressure after participating
for 10 minutes in a laughter session. It does not mean that those who
are taking 2-3 tablets for blood pressure everyday will be completely
cured. Maybe, you will require 2 tablets if you are taking 3, or
borderline high blood pressure patients may not require any
medication. It takes years to develop high blood pressure. It cannot
be reversed in a few days or a month. But definitely laughter will
exercise some control and arrest further progress of the disease.
Similarly, if you are at a high risk of developing heart disease,
laughter may be the best preventive medicine. Those who are suffering
from heart disease and have stabilized on medication will find that
laughter therapy improves the blood circulation and oxygen levels to
the heart muscles. Those who have had heart attacks or have undergone
bypass surgery can also participate in laughter therapy.

Strengthens the Immune System: Our immune system plays a most
important role in keeping good health or the development of
infections, allergies and cancers. It has been proved by
psychoneuroimmunologists that all negative emotions like anxiety,
depression or anger weaken the immune system of the body, thereby
reducing its fighting capacity against infections. Laughter helps to
increase the count of natural killer lymphocytes (a type of white
cells) and also raises the antibody levels. Researchers have found
more antibodies in the mucous of the nose and respiratory passages
after laughter therapy. There are many members of laughter clubs who
have noticed that the frequency of common colds, sore throats and
chest infections gets reduced.

Natural Pain Killer: Laughter increase the levels of Endorphins in
our bodies, which are natural pain killers. It may help in reducing
the intensity of pain in those suffering from arthritis, spondylitis
and muscular spasms of the body. Many ladies have reported reduced
frequency of migraine headaches and tension headaches.

Alleviates Bronchitis and Asthma: Laughter is one of the best
exercises for those suffering from asthma and bronchitis. It improves
the lung capacity and oxygen levels in the blood. Doctors recommend
chest physiotherapy to bring out mucous (phlegm) from the respiratory
passages. Blowing forcefully into an instrument and blowing balloons
is one of the common exercises given to asthmatics. Laughter therapy
does the same job, more easily and cheaply. There are many
individuals suffering from asthma and bronchitis who participate in
laughter clubs. They have reported reduced frequency of their
attacks. Laughter therapy may cause some discomfort if you have
severe bronchospasm. There is a small percentage of asthma cases who
may get a little aggravation by doing any exercise (exercise induced
asthma). Such individuals should consult their doctors before taking
up laughter therapy. One of the most common causes for frequent
attacks of asthma is infection. Laughter Therapy increases the
antibody levels in the mucous membranes of the respiratory passages,
thereby reducing the frequency of chest infections. It also tones up
the normal mucous clearing system of the bronchial tubes. Stress is
another factor which can bring on an attack of asthma. By reducing
stress, it might improve the prognosis of the disease.

Improves Stamina in Athletes: Since breathing capacity is one of the
factors which determines stamina in sports, laughter before any
competitive sports activity will increase the relaxation levels and
hence, performance. Laughter Therapy can be introduced as a regular
exercise in any kind of sports activity.

Internal Jogging: There are plenty of exercises available for your
body muscles, but laughing provides a good massage to all internal
organs. It enhances their blood supply and increases their
efficiency. It has been compared to magic fingers which reach into
the interior of the abdomen and massage your organs.

Good for Actors and Singers: Laughter therapy can be very beneficial
for singers and actors. Increased lung capacity, exercise of the
diaphragm and abdominal muscles will help to gain a better control
over speech. It may enhance self confidence and reduce stage fright.

Makes You Look Younger: People do exercise for all the muscles of the
body, but there is no regular exercise designed for facial muscles
except in Yoga. Laughter is an excellent exercise for your facial
muscles. It tones up the muscles of the face and improves facial
expressions. When you laugh, your face becomes red due to an increase
in blood supply which nourishes the facial skin and makes it glow.
Laughing people look more cheerful and attractive. By squeezing the
tear glands through laughter, it moistens the eyes adding a little
sparkle to them. Laughter exercises the abdominal muscles and helps
to improve muscle tone of those with pot bellies.

Snoring: Snoring occurs as a result of lack of tone in the muscles of
the soft palate. Laughter therapy is very good for the muscles of the
soft palate and throat. Some individuals have reported improvements.
We have already started clinical studies on the effects of laughter
on snoring.

Interpersonal Relationships: Laughter brings people together and
improves interpersonal relationships. All the members of a laughter
club meet each other with open minds and they care for each other.
You will get a chance to interact with a number of people with a
positive frame of mind. Today, members of different laughter clubs
are like family members. They know each other well, they share their
griefs and sorrows. They share their joyful moments by meeting each
other, going out for picnics etc. They organize health workshops,
yoga camps and naturopathy seminars from time to time. People from
various walks of life come together and greet each other with smiling
faces.

Self Confidence Through Laughter: When you are laughing in a group in
a public place with your arms up towards the sky, it removes your
inhibitions and over a period of time you become a more sociable,
unreserved and outgoing person. Admittedly, some people are a bit
reluctant to join the laughter group initially, in spite of a strong
inclination towards doing so, for fear of appearing absurd to
onlookers. However, this a passing phase and the very decision to
join a laughter club opens your mind. Gradually, it also adds to your
self confidence. It will also help to develop your personality and
leadership qualities. In a laughter club, many members are encouraged
to conduct the sessions. People who were not able to speak a word in
public, often become very good public speakers. The laughter club of
Johnson Garden (Mulund) has produced more than thirty anchor persons.
With the passage of time, you will observe a transformation in your
personality. You develop a more positive attitude towards life. Minor
setbacks or irritants in every day life no longer cause a serious
disturbance, and you learn to deal with them much more effectively.

[Editor's Note: This article was reprinted with permission from Dr
Aniruddha Malpani, MD Medical Director.

Some Important Facts About Dentistry
http://www.toothwisdom.net/

One of the self-evident goals of dentistry is to help people save
their teeth. When measured by this "yardstick", dentistry has been
successful - most of us have more teeth than our parents did at a
similar age. Nevertheless, the materials and techniques used to save
teeth are a direct assault on our health. Our amalgam fillings are
52% mercury, which is poison, pure and simple. Root canal fillings
produce the most toxic organic substance known to man. Approximately
95% of all extracted teeth result in cavitations. Cavitations are
unhealed, toxic, avascular (without a blood supply) holes in the
jawbone caused by improperly extracted teeth. There is
a "Matterhorn" of evidence to support the contention that nearly all
the chronic degenerative diseases and nearly all of the autoimmune
diseases can be laid at the feet of dentistry. The website you are
on will show only a partial list of sources that document these
serious indictments of the dental profession.

Health-conscious dentistry (HCD) is simply dentistry that endeavors
to do no harm to the patient. It's fine to save teeth, but if the
materials the dentist uses, or the techniques he employs to save
teeth, result in undermining the health of the patient, then the
patient has not been done a favor. Knowledge of the subjects
discussed on this website should be a goal of all dentists who claim
to care about their patients.

ROOT CANALS

A "root canal" is a procedure that a dentist uses to allow a patient
to keep a dead tooth in his or her mouth. The fallacy with this
concept is that the body doesn't like dead things in it and will
try, sometimes desperately, to get rid of the dead thing.
Notwithstanding, the fact that it may be "handy" to save a tooth
for "dental convenience", it does not change the fact that
root canal treatments can devastate the human immune system. "Root
canals" cause:

Suppression of the immune system

The creation of an "interference field" on the meridian that the
particular tooth is on (meridian - a channel of energy that flows
between different tissues, organs and structures) .

The production of the most toxic organic substance known to man.
Root-canal fillings can cause serious side effects. Dr. Weston price
is recognized as the greatest researcher that the dental profession
has ever produced. Dr. Price, after observing many patients with
crippling degenerative diseases not responding to treatment,
suspected infected root canal-filled teeth to be the cause. He then
embarked on a 25 - year-long study to see if his suspicions were
correct. This study was done during the first 3 decades of the 20th
century! However this information was not shared with us when we
were dental students so we had a big void in our dental
education where root canals are concerned. Dr. Price devised a
testing method which disclosed the presence of infection in a tooth
which otherwise seemed to be healthy - that is, the implanting of
the root canal filled tooth under the skin of a laboratory animal.
He found that when the root-filled tooth of a patient with a
degenerative disease was extracted and imbedded in an animal, that
animal would develop the patient's disease. He did this in over 5000
animal studies and the results were consistent.

In the beginning, Dr. Price did not know just where the infection
was hiding in the tooth, only that a patient's illness was rapidly
transferred from his root-filled tooth to laboratory animals in case
after case. Dr. Price was able to culture the bacteria in root-
filled teeth and trap their toxins, reproducing a disease in a
rabbit by injecting the cultured material into the animal. Dr. Price
discovered a wide variety of degenerative diseases to be
transferable to rabbits, such as endocarditis and other heart
diseases, kidney and bladder diseases, arthritis, rheumatism, mental
diseases, lung problems, pregnancy complications, almost any
degenerative problem - and after extraction of these teeth, a large
percentage of patients recovered from their illnesses.

When sound, uninfected natural teeth were implanted in animals, no
adverse health effects were experienced. This vitally important
research was forced underground, and has remained virtually unknown
since its 1923 publication. Millions of people are ill, suffering
from degenerative diseases for which the medical profession is at a
loss regarding cause and treatment; the degenerative disease problem
continues to bankrupt our people and country.

Today we know that the toxins made by the bacteria that live by the
billions in root-canal teeth contain the most toxic organic
substance known to man - thio-ethers. Thio-ethers are 1000 times
more toxic than botulism toxin, which used to be considered the most
toxic organic substance. So from a practical standpoint, one would
be well-advised to worry less about anthrax and instead, focus on
root canals which are much more likely to cause you personal harm.
In addition to thio-ethers, other severe toxins from these
root-canal bacteria include thio-ethanols and mercaptans which have
been found in the tumors of women who have breast cancer, draining
through the lymphatic system down the cervical chain of lymph nodes
and ultimately in to the breast tissue. Besides being harbored in
root canals, these dangerous bacteria also take up residence in
cavitations which result from most extracted teeth (see
Cavitations). Thus one can get a "double-whammy" from the root
canals and the cavitations.

A tooth is basically comprised of 3 layers. The enamel (what we see
when we look at another person's teeth, the hard, white attractive
outer layer of the tooth), the pulp (a tiny island of soft tissue at
the center of the tooth - the same place in a tooth that a core
would be in an apple - the so-called "nerve"), and the dentin.
Dentin accounts for about 90% of the tooth. When looked at under a
microscope, dentin has a very specific structure. It is made up
of "jillions" of incredibly tiny tubules that radiate outward from
the pulp to the outer edge of the tooth.

If one could some how take each of one of these "jillions"
of "tubules" in a front tooth and lay them end to end, they would
stretch for 3 miles. These dentinal tubules are like tiny pipes
that radiate outward from the pulp to the outer surface of the
tooth - kind of like spokes of a wheel (if you think of a cross-
section of a tooth). The centers of these tubules are filled with
living protoplasm. The protoplasm in these tubules has no blood
supply so it depends on the blood vessels in the pulp for it's
nourishment or sustenance. Once a "root-canal" is done to a tooth,
the pulp is gone (sacrificed) - which makes a root canal tooth a
dead tooth - an expensive, dead tooth. Now the protoplasm in these
miles and miles of dentinal tubules dies, and these tubules become
a "dandy" place for bacteria to hang out.

They have "free eats" on the dead, decaying protoplasm in the
tubules. These tubules are 1 to 1.3 microns in diameter- big enough
to accommodate bacteria, but too small to allow entry of white blood
cells (which are the body's principal way of controlling excessive
bacterial populations). Now your root-canal tooth becomes a
bacteria factory. The bacteria now are cloistered away from the
body's defenses and thus have free reign to proliferate. Existing
inside the tooth, these bacteria have no access to air so they
mutate into the anaerobic form - the kind that can live in the
absence of air. When the bacteria mutate, their metabolism changes
so that they give off waste products that are incredibly toxic.
These toxins include thio-ethers, thio-ethanols, and mercaptons.

Is It "Wisdom" to Extract Healthy Teeth?

Our forefathers, those born before about 1920, didn't have trouble
with their wisdom teeth and there were no oral surgeons. The
condition of "impacted" wisdom teeth was essentially unknown. The
skulls of ancient tribes from all over the world show no such
problem...

Current studies conclude that literally billions of teeth have been
removed unnecessarily, which has made a comfortable living for a lot
of oral surgeons-nine out of ten American teenagers (who have dental
insurance) fall prey to this operation. The cumulative cost of
wisdom tooth extraction is estimated to exceed "that for any other
surgery," says Dr. J.F. Tulloch, reporting in the Journal of Dental
Education.

One of the arguments given for removing the wisdom teeth is that
they can push the other teeth forward over the years, forcing the
incisors (front teeth) to overlap. There is virtually no evidence to
support this assertion. The front teeth tend to drift forward, at
least into middle age, whether or not the wisdom teeth have been
removed. This natural crowding cannot be prevented by extracting the
third molar (wisdom) teeth.

The surgery is not without its problems. It's certainly not a benign
procedure and can cause some serious complications such as
infection, "dry socket," nerve damage, temporary or permanent
anesthesia of the lip, lingual nerve damage, numbness of the tongue,
and damage to the adjacent teeth.

One Michigan study found that more that 10 percent of all wisdom
tooth extractions cause complications. Other complications mentioned
by these authors included persistent bleeding, damage to the gums,
and jawbone loss (which may affect the support of the adjacent
second molars).

Even when a molar is causing a problem, extraction should be the last
resort. From the standpoint of the oral surgeon there is only one
course of action: take it out. This is often unwise as cleansing the
area, trimming the gum, and treating any infection may be all that
is necessary. In other words, treat it as you would any other
infected tooth.

A 1991 report in the New York Times concluded: "If surgeons removed
only those wisdom teeth that actually caused problems.the nation
would save at least $150 million a year in medical expenses with no
ill effects. And tens of thousands of people, mostly teenagers,
would be spared the aches, pains, and complications that can result
from the surgery."

Action to take: If a dentist recommends removal of wisdom teeth that
are not causing any problems, ask him to show you the X rays and
explain why the surgery is necessary. After he shows you with a lot
of scientific scary stuff, such as, "you may need emergency surgery
later so it's best to get them out now" and "the extraction is more
difficult if you are older," get a second opinion from a dentist who
doesn't do surgery. Since only 30 percent of wisdom teeth become
impacted, 70 percent are being extracted unnecessarily.

Fluoridation - Why The Controversy?

Controversy surrounding the fluoridation experiment has persisted
for half a century. Japan and all of the continental Europe have
rejected the idea for reasons of safety and medical ethics.
Experiments in poor countries produced such harmful results that
they were quickly halted. Why does fluoridation continue to receive
vigorous government and professional backing in the English-speaking
nations?

Fluoride Facts in Brief

Fluoride has never received FDA approval and does not meet the legal
requirements of safety and effectiveness necessary for such
approval.

Fluoride is a pharmacologically active substance unrelated to water
purification. There is no possibility of obtaining individual
informed consent for medication with this experimental drug when it
is placed in a public water system. For these reasons, fluoridation
violates the Nuremberg Code of medical ethics and human rights.

In over 50 years of testing, it has never been demonstrated that
fluoride is effective in preventing tooth decay.

A world wide decline in human tooth decay has occurred at the same
rate in populations exposed to elevated fluoride levels and in
populations not exposed to elevated fluoride levels. This
spontaneous decline in tooth decay has been superstitiously
attributed to fluoride.

Fluoride is an accumulative protoplasmic poison rated at or above the
toxicity of lead.

LEAD Toxicity Rating: 3-4 FLUORIDE Toxicity Rating: 4

3= moderately toxic 4=very toxic (Toxicology of Commercial
Products,
5th Ed. 1984)

Under U.S. Law (under the EPA)

Maximum allowable LEAD in drinking water: 0.015 mg./liter

Maximum allowable FLUORIDE in drinking water: 4.0 mg./liter*
*Over 350 times the permitted lead level

Medical research shows that hip fracture rates are 20- 40 % higher in
localities with fluoridated water.

Epidemiological analysis shows that bone cancer rates in young males
are 80-600% higher in fluoridated localities.

The fluoride dose prescribed by doctors and the dose administered
without prescription to everyone in community drinking water is
expected to cause dental fluorosis in 10 % of children. Actual
Public Health Service figures show that 30% of children in
fluoridated localities have dental fluorosis, and 10 % of children
in Non-fluoridated areas now have fluorosis.

Fluorosis is malformation of tooth enamel characterized by
discoloration and brittleness.

Since there is no limitation or monitoring of the use of fluoridated
water in food processing, many processed foods contain high
concentrations of fluoride.

Concentrations of fluoride in toothpaste are 500-1500 parts per
million. This fluoride is absorbed through the lining of the mouth
and deposited in the body like ingested fluoride. One to two
brushings can yield a dose of 1milligram fluoride.

Ingested fluoride is deposited in bones as well as teeth. X-rays show
abnormal bone structure in children with dental fluorosis.

Fluorides are used in the biochemistry laboratory to stop enzyme
activity. Fluorides have the same effect on enzyme activity in the
human body.

The chemicals injected into public water supplies to elevate
fluoride levels and raw industrial waste. The chemicals most
commonly used are sodium silicofluoride and hydrofluosilicic acid,
toxic by-products of phosphate fertilizer production.

Fluoridated water increases corrosion and leaching of lead from
water mains and plumbing.

Fluoride levels in the sewer effluent of fluoridated water systems
are not monitored or controlled. It has been shown that fish are
killed by fluoride emissions at and below the levels probably
emitted in sewer effluent.

The ADA Misinformation on Mercury

The American Dental Association continues to remain in denial about
the toxicity of mercury. Dr. Murray Vimy is one of the leading
mercury researchers and he has provided a detailed chronology
documenting how mercury has been clearly established as a
contributing factor for periodontal disease.

The news release by the American Dental Association (ADA) dated June
13, 2001 contains a very significant error. The ADA President Dr.
Robert M. Anderton is reported as saying,

"There is no sound scientific evidence supporting a link between
amalgam fillings and systemic diseases or chronic illnesses."

Yet this is well known in the published, peer-reviewed dental
journals that mercury leaks directly from amalgam into adjacent oral
tissues causing periodontal disease (gum disease).

Critical Fact #1: In 1957, Zander (JADA 55:11-15)
reported "materials used in restorative dentistry may be a
contributing factor in gingival disease."

Critical Fact #2: In 1961, App (J Prosth Dent 11:522-532) suggested
that there was greater chronic inflammation around amalgam sites
than non-amalgam areas.

Critical Fact #3: In 1964, Trott and Sherkat (J CDA, 30:766-770)
showed that the presence of amalgam correlates with gingival
disease. Such disease was not present at contralateral amalgam free
sites.

Critical Fact #4: In 1969, Sanches Sotres et al (J. Periodo.
140:543-546) confirmed Trott and Sherkat findings.

Critical Fact #5: In 1972, Turgeon et al. (J CDA 37:255-256)
reported the presence of very significant erythema around amalgam
restorations that was not present at control non-amalgam sites.

Critical Fact #6: In 1973, Trivedi and Talim (J. Prosth. Dentistry,
29:73-81) demonstrated that 62.5% of amalgam sites have inflammatory
periodontal tissue reaction.

Thus, as early as 1973, a case can be made that the presence of
dental mercury-amalgam results in chronic inflammation and bleeding
in the gingival tissue adjacent to it; in other words, in situ
amalgam produced chronic Gingivitis.

Critical fact #7: In 1974, Freden et al. ( Odontol. Revy, 25:207-
210) showed that gingival biopsy material from sites not adjacent to
amalgam had 1-10 mcg mercury/gram of tissue (mean=3); whereas,
gingival biopsy sites near amalgams contained 19-380 mcg
mercury/gram of tissue (mean=147).

Critical Fact #8: In 1976, Goldschmidt et al. (J. Perio. Res.,
11:108-115)demonstrated that amalgam corrosion products were
cytotoxic to gingival cells at concentrations of 10-6: that is,
micrograms/gram of tissue.

Critical Fact #9: in 1984, the year of the NIDR/ADA Workshop, Fisher
it al (J Oral Rehab, 11:399-405) reported that at amalgam sites
alveolar bone loss was very pronounced and statistically significant
as compared to control non-amalgam sites! In other words, in situ
amalgam produces chronic Periodontitis.

This suggests that placing mercury fillings leads to a dentist-
induced disease, periodontal disease, which the same dentists then
treat. This is iatrogenesis.

Thus, for the ADA to conclude "there is no sound scientific evidence
supporting a link between amalgam fillings and systemic diseases of
chronic illness" is incorrect.

Periodontal disease is one of the most prevalent chronic diseases in
Man, and mercury fillings contribute significantly! Such statements
by ADA spokespersons suggest that the ADA and its advisors may be
knowingly disinforming the public through the media or they lack an
understanding of the research about mercury release from amalgam
published in their own journals.

Murray J. Vimy DMD Clinical Associate Professor Faculty of Medicine,
University of Calgary. Calgary, Canada, July 4, 2001

DR. MERCOLA'S COMMENT:

Dr. Vimy is one of the top mercury researchers in the world and his
comments to the ADA press release are most informative. You can
review the article I published with Dr. Klinghardt earlier this year
for further information on mercury detoxification.

Thanks to Jeff Green of Citizens for Health for sending this very
interesting timeline regarding the dental use of mercury.

Steep 10-20 mins.
Cool, and apply with cotton ball.

DRY SKIN
OATMEAL, VANILLA EXTRACT & BAKING SODA: Combine 1 c. oatmeal, 1 c.
warm water, 1 Tb. vanilla extract, and 1/2 c. baking soda in a
blender or food processor until you have a smooth paste. Pour this
paste under the running water while drawing the bath. Very soothing
to dry, itchy skin.

DANDRUFF
APPLE CIDER VINEGAR: The vinegar is poured into the hair, massaged
into the scalp, and left to dry for a few minutes. Then the hair is
washed. The process is repeated daily until the dandruff disappears,
usually within a few days.

DAMAGED, DRY HAIR
EGG: A nourishing conditioner for dry or damaged hair which can be
used for all hair types: Separate the white of an egg from the yolk,
whip it to a peak. Add 1 Tb. of water to the yolk and blend until
the
mixture is creamy. Then mix the white and yolk together. Wet your
hair with warm water, remove the excess moisture, and apply the
mixture to your scalp with your fingertips. Massage gently until the
froth is worked into your scalp, then rinse the hair with cool
water.
Keep applying the mixture until it is used up and then rinsed until
all of the egg is washed away.

HAIR LIGHTENER
RHUBARB: To lighten hair, use 1/4 c. chopped fresh rhubarb to 2 c.
boiling water. Cool; strain; apply as a rinse.

OILY SKIN
OATMEAL, EGG, LEMON, & APPLE: For oily skin, mix 1/2 c. cooked
oatmeal, 1 egg white, 1 Tb. lemon juice, and 1/2 c. mashed apple
into
a smooth paste. Leave on 3-5 mins. and tissue off.
Follow up with more plain castor oil, if desired.

OVERWEIGHT
CHINESE GREEN TEA: Effective at getting rid of fat, drink up to 3
cups of green tea daily. Regular tea can also be used with a lesser
effect.

FACIAL CLEANSER
CORNSTARCH & GLYCERIN: Mix 2 Tb. cornstarch, 2 Tb. glycerin, and 1/2
c. water until smooth. Heat in a small pan placed in a water bath
inside another pan. Heat until thick and clear; it will have the
consistency of pudding. Do not boil. Cool completely, Use in place
of soap to cleanse your skin. (If jelly is too thick, you may thin
it by adding a little water, one Tb. at a time, until you reach the
desired consistency.)

WRINKLES & SKIN FRESHENER
VODKA, FENNEL, & HONEY: Combine 2 Tb. vodka, 1 Tb. fennel seeds, and
1 1/2 tsp. honey. Stir well and allow to sit for 3 days. Strain
mixture. Use full strength or add 2 Tb. water to dilute. Use a
cotton ball to apply to face as a toner. This was also a tried and
true recipe for wrinkles. (And I have tried this one and can vouch
for its effectiveness...I love it...)

ARTHRITIS
FISH: A daily serving of fresh fish or fish oil capsules helps to
give relief of arthritis and other aches and pains.

HAY FEVER
FENUGREEK SEED Steep 1 tsp. steep in 1 c. water, covered, for 10
mins. Drink 1 c. a day to help hay fever symptoms.

COLD & FLU
GARLIC SOUP: GARLIC, CHICKEN SOUP OR BOUILLON, & EGGS: A delicious
recipe for a cold or flu!: Cut up half-a-dozen cloves of garlic and
saute' in oil, being careful not to let them burn. Add a quart of
stock (such as beef), and let it come to a boil for just a few
moments. Then lower the heat. Separate two eggs and add the whites
to the hot liquid, stirring rapidly. Mix the yolks with two Tbs. of
vinegar and then pour them in. Add salt and pepper if you want and
some croutons, if handy.

COUGHS & ASTHMA
GARLIC & BRANDY: Make a garlic tincture by placing three to four
peeled buds in brandy. Steep this in a dark closet for 14 days. Use
several drops at a time, several times a day for coughs or asthma.
Garlic is an exceptional cleanser for the body and has antimicrobial
action similar to other antibiotics.

DIARRHEA
SWEET POTATOES: Eat boiled sweet potatoes seasoned with salt and
pepper before bedtime to cure chronic diarrhea.

EARACHE
CHAMOMILE: Steep 1-2 tsp. flowers in boiling water for 10-15 mins.
Strain out the water, and apply the hot flowers in a cloth for
alleviation of the earache.

EYE PROBLEMS
HYDROMEL: HONEY & WATER: For Hydromel, an eye lotion, simmer a cup
of
water and a tsp. of honey for 5 mins. Dip a cloth in the liquid and
apply to the closed eye.

HEADACHE
ALMONDS: Eat 10-12 almonds, the equivalent of two aspirins, for a
migraine headache.
